On Thursday, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, whom he met in New York this week, had asked him for an "urgent" deal on Britain's missing food supply. Addressing supporters on his weekly webcast, Bolsonaro said he forwarded Johnson's request to Agriculture Minister Theresa Christina.
"He wants an urgent deal with us to import the food that is missing in the UK," he said. The British embassy in Brazil denied Bolsonaro's story, saying the Brazilian President's testimony was not a reminder of facts.
The President's office did not immediately respond to a request for clarification about the product.
In recent weeks, rising natural gas prices have forced several UK fertilizer factories to close, resulting in shortages of CO2 used to add carbonated drinks to beer and coke and immobilize poultry and pigs before slaughter.
The UK government, seeking to prevent meat and poultry shortages, has stepped up emergency government assistance and warned its food producers to prepare for a 400 percent increase in carbon prices. Ministers, including Johnson, have repeatedly denied speculation about a lack of traditional Christmas dishes like roast turkey, despite warnings from some vendors.
Bolsonaro said Johnson had also asked him to increase imports of Brazilian whiskey from Britain but added in conversations on social media that it was up to the private sector, not the government.
