  • You may not think much of the emoticons you use to text every day, but there's a fascinating human story behind them.

"My dad's music is a message to free the world from his sleep mentality," says reggae musician Andrew Tosh from his home in Kingston, Jamaica. His father, Peter Tosh, was one of the three founders of The Wailers in the 1960s, alongside Bob Marley and Bunny Weiler.

Peter Tosh's story doesn't have a happy ending; he was killed in a horrific attack in the 1980s but left a musical and political legacy. And if you open the emoji keyboard and search for "levitation," you will find a thumbnail image of a man in a dark black suit, hat, and shadow.

This is Peter Tosh.

Name Mackintosh, daughter of Peter Tosh, manages the property. He said his father's legacy was linked to justice and human rights, and he was proud to continue his work. "He doesn't just want people to dance; he wants to dance for his own (political) revival."

I didn't know that... but I knew the picture was based on Bob, Bunny, and my dad in costume, and my dad was tall. "It was a surprise for his brother Andrew too. "Oh, cool!" she says. "I know this picture. A younger version of Peter Tosh."

How did reggae legends become emojis?

This story takes us from Kingston, Jamaica, to rainy Seattle, USA, especially at Microsoft headquarters in the mid-1990s. The PC revolution has just begun, and typist Vincent Connor is working on a new font. Wedding is one of the scripts he wrote; image-based fonts for use on initial web pages.

Mr. Connaire is a fan of music, especially ska. One of his favorite bands is the British ska revival group The Specials.

In the photo, Peter Tosh stands with his back to Bob Marley and looks out of frame in a dark suit, bow tie, and sunglasses. This image inspired the designers of 2 Tone Records. And this logo was adapted for Webdings by Mr. Connaire two decades later.

In his version, the right person jumps, or rather pogoing - popular with specials fans - and should represent a "leap" from one side to the other. Years later, many Webdings characters are encoded as emojis and posted on every smartphone and technology platform globally.
