John Challis, known as Boise on the series Only Fools and Horses, has died at the age of 79.
Co-Star Sir David Jason acknowledged Challis as "an amazing actor" and "a man in the truest sense of the word." His character - unscrupulous used car dealer Terrance Aubrey Boyce - is a comedy fan favorite. Challis took part in the show with Sir David and Nicholas Lindhurst, which aired throughout 1981 until the last show in 2003.
The character - a longtime classmate and scheming rival of Sir David Del Boy's surface - will initially only appear in one scene, but his role becomes more and more famous as the series progresses.
How John Challis became one of the most significant characters in comedy
He was so popular with viewers that after the continuing adventures of Boise and his ailing wife Marlene, the BBC developed a spin-off show when "Only Fools and Horses" ended its long run. It was held for four series.
Sue Holderness, who played Marlene, paid tribute to Challis as a "beloved friend." "Marlene is unthinkable without Boise," he said. "John Challis has been my partner on screen and stage for 36 years and my dear friend. Dear RIP John. I will miss you every day."
And Stephen Wooddock, who plays Jevon on the sitcom, said Challis was "a fantastic actor and an amazing person to work with. There's no Del Boy without Boise. RIP is a friend of mine from Peckham."

"Rest assured there will be an opportunity to celebrate John's life in the future - when everyone is welcome."
Charlotte Moore, the head of content, said Chalis was "an extraordinary actor who will be remembered for his role as Boise in Fools and Horses Only, a character so loved by millions." Challis has enjoyed playing Boise on screen for decades - and has even starred in other entertainment shows, fan conventions, and even this year's video release, advocating face masks in public to help fight Kovid.

But he also showed his skills as a Shakespeare actor when appearing in the film Richard III. Featuring the Outdoor Show and A Midsummer Night's Dream, staged at London's Regents Park in 1995, just at the height of the popularity of Only Fools and Horses.
Most recently, he played Monty Steins on the ITV show Benidorm.
Actress Chrissy Rock, who appeared with Chalis on the show, said she was heartbroken. He tweeted, "John, you are a real man, and you have always loved and supported me so much. I think of your family and close friends during this difficult time. Have a good rest. Crissy xx."
Earlier this month, Chalis canceled his college tour due to health reasons. He was supposed to show up on the 30 scheduled dates, declaring an "intimate evening with John Challis," but had to cancel the tour after the meeting.
