Key Sentence:

  • Matthew Strachan, the British composer who co-wrote the theme music for Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, died at 50.
  • He wrote quiz subjects and dramatic show music with his father, Keith.

He became known worldwide through the many international versions of the program. "Matthew was loved by his family and will sadly miss him," Keith Strachan told the news.

"He was a warm, fun, and talented person." The father-daughter team wrote 95 pieces of music for the show in eight days in 1998. They won the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers for Most Broadcast Music on American Television Award 10 years ago, earning them a place in the organization's Hall of Fame.

Speaking to Radio in London in 2014, Strachan recalled the "unusual circumstances" in which he was asked to write the iconic score. He said, "...a pilot was made that didn't broadcast and was very unsuccessful, just didn't work.

"The show's executive producer came out one morning and called the whole creative team and said, 'We have to throw it all away and start over because otherwise, ITV will turn it around.'"

Strachan said he and his father had been invited to a meeting. After watching the show also talking to the director, "it was finally decided that there should be 95 pieces of music ... to cover any possibility that was said. It happens in the event". " He added, "There is music for every show, there is music, when the lights go out then the question is highlighted ... [this] the idea that it has to be entirely subconscious.

"And then we came up with a brilliant idea - which kept us going - every time a new question arose, to play music in semitones to increase the stakes a bit - but it added to our workload. We work 24 hours a day to do this."

To reflect on why the program is "excellent television," he said, "The format is great, it's straightforward, it's very intimate, and there's a tension attached to it, which is why I think all the lighting and music for it fits in."

Strachan's other work includes music for Home Front on Radio 4 and several comedy shows by Jasper Carrot, including Detectives Police Scam. On Twitter, writer Dirk Mags remembered him as a "great friend and great talent" who was "gentle, kind, talented and very funny."

Composer Kevin Sargent also paid tribute to him, saying he was "a talented, clever and funny man whose most famous work was redefining the television broadcasting genre." Strachan also writes scores for musicals and occasionally performs his own "signature" songs, according to his company biography.
