  • Walt Disney and Scarlett Johansson have settled a lawsuit over the release of the Marvel superhero film Black Widow.

Johansson sued Disney two months ago, accusing him of breaching their contract when he offered the film on its Disney+ streaming service while still playing in theaters.

"I am delighted that they have come to a mutual agreement with Scarlett Johansson about Black Widow," said Alan Bergman, Chairman of Disney Studios. We appreciate our contribution to the Marvel cinematic universe also look forward to working with you on several future projects, including Disney's Tower of Terror."

Johansson also said he was pleased to have settled his differences with the entertainment giant and looked forward to working with them again. "I'm extremely proud from the work we've done together over the years, and I'm very excited about my creative relationship with the team," he said in a statement.

Johansson starred in The Black Widow as the Russian assassin-turned-superhero Avengers film, which he's starred in nine Marvel films. His appeal was filed with the Los Angeles Supreme Court in July. He claimed that Disney's Marvel Studios promised that Black Widow would be a "theatrical version."

He said he understood this to mean a "time window" before streaming, a period traditionally of 90 days.

Black Widow, which debuted in theaters and via Disney+ simultaneously on July 9, set a record for box office promotion during the coronavirus pandemic in its first weekend, grossing $218 million (£161 million), but went on to break box office revenue.

According to film tracking service Box Office Mojo, he has now made more than $378 million in worldwide box office revenue.

Disney said that the film also made about $60 million in streaming purchases in its first 20 days of release. During the pandemic, some of Hollywood's major studios have opted to skip theaters, many of which were closed, and have instead released films online.

Now that most theaters have reopened, Disney and another giant, Warner Bros., have decided to stick to its strategy by releasing its feature film twice. Johansson topped Forbes magazine's list of the world's highest-paid actresses in 2018 and 2019, with pre-tax earnings expected to exceed $56 million through June 2019.
