Key Sentence:
- Manga artist Takao Saito, who created the longest-running Japanese comic book series, died at 84.
- Saito's most famous work is Golgo 13, the story of a professional assassin, first published in 1968 and later adapted into games and films.
The 201st issue came out in July of that year and broke the Guinness World Record for the most volumes ever published in a manga series. He died of pancreatic cancer, said the editor of Shogakukan. Born in western Japan in 1936, Saito published his first manga cartoon in 1955 while working as a hairdresser.
The success of another of his works, Typhoon Goro, in the 1960s prompted him to move from Osaka to Tokyo and start his own production company. But his most famous work is Golgotha 13, also known as the Duke of Togo, an assassin who performed hit tasks worldwide.
Saiko illustrated and wrote the series, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018.
The publisher informed him that the Golgo 13 series would be continued after his death.
In 2013, Saito said that he was afraid the series would be interrupted at any time, so he planned the end of the series. "I always had nightmares that my manga was going to be cut, and I thought it was coming to an end, so I had an ending ready," he said. "[But] the manga lasts so long that it no longer belongs to the author, but belongs to the reader."
