With a nod to Laver, Federer helped create the Laver Cup in 2017, an exhibition team competition featuring the top six players from Europe against six worldwide. The event took place in Prague, Chicago, and Geneva.
"In our sport, we don't have enough platforms for former great players, legends of the game," Federer said by telephone from his home in Switzerland, recovering from knee surgery that forced him to miss the US Open. "When you look at golf, they have a great way of doing it. Former players are always there, always welcoming and always advising the younger ones.
Such events like the Laver Cup are an opportunity to meet legends like Rod Laver and many others to light up. those who paved the way for us."
Federer, along with longtime agent Tony Godsick, is doing their part to connect some of the game's best past and present through the Laver Cup. The two captains are Bjorn Borg, winner of five consecutive Wimbledon titles and six French Open titles, and John McEnroe, who has won the US Open four times and three Wimbledon championships. The vice-captains are the younger brother of McEnroe Patrick, a semifinalist at the 1991 Australian Open, and compatriot Borg Sweden and former world number four, Thomas Enquist.
European team Borg has six players in the top 10. They are number 2 Daniil Medvedev, who won this month's US Open, beating Novak Djokovic; 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas; Number 4 Alexander Zverev; 5 Andrey Rublev; Number 7 Mateo Berrettini; and 10 Casper Ruud.
