The Sex Pistols, According To John Lyden, Are Foolish And Harmful.

Key Sentence:

  • John Lyden challenged the Supreme Court's decision to allow the Sex Pistols' music to be used in a new television drama, calling it "stupid and destructive."

In her first public statement about the decision, the singer said she was worried the drama would be "very negative." Former drummer Paul Cook and guitarist Steve Jones sued Lydon, also known as Johnny Rothen, after trying to veto punk band songs.

The judge ruled that it could be overturned under a "majority rule" agreement. Lydon argued that the Group Membership Agreement (BMA) was never followed, and individual members rejected that previous license application.

However, Sir Anthony Mann ruled last week that the contract was valid and active and that the majority of the group could remove the veto power of any individual member. Cook and Jones welcomed the decision, saying it "brings clarity to the decision-making process and supports the agreement of members of the collective decision-making group."

A press release posted on Lydon's website on Tuesday said it was "disappointing that a Supreme Court judge ruled that John Lydon was bound by an undated agreement signed in 1998." It was later discovered that the singer was now "powerless to prevent the falsification of the Sex Pistols true story."

"I'm lead singer and songwriter, frontman, image, party, you say.

I put it out there," Lydon said in a statement. "How is that irrelevant?" This is stupid to me. It spoils who the band is, and that's why I worry the whole project could be so hostile.

"How could anyone think that this could have happened without consulting me and dealing with my personal life and the issues within it, without any meaningful contact with me before the project was announced to the world?" he continued.

The Order of Death, included on the 1984 album by Lydon Public Image Ltd, is also called This Is What You Want ... This Is What Get. Lydon previously spoke out against Danny Boyle's television drama The Gun, calling it "the most disrespectful [insult] I've ever seen." The six-part series, produced by Disney and airing next year, is based on Jones' 2016 memory titled "The Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Gun."
