The United Nations Environment Programme has named Sir David Attenborough a Champion of the Earth. The prestigious award honors the 95-year-dedication old's to telling stories about nature and climate change. Sir David accepted the award and stated that the world must act now to protect wildlife and the planet.
The Green Planet and A Plastic Ocean are two of his well-known documentaries. But, according to Sir David, environmental success stories should give us hope that change is possible. "Whales were on the verge of extinction around the world fifty years ago. Then people banded together, and there are no more whales in the sea than any living human has ever seen, "He proposed.
"We know what the issues are and how to solve them. All we need is concerted action." According to UNEP Executive Director Inger Anderson, the UN chose to honor Sir David because of his dedication to broadcasting the natural world.
"If we have a chance of preventing climate and biodiversity breakdowns and cleaning up polluted ecosystems, millions of us fell in adoration with the earth that he captured on film and in writing, in his voice," said UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen.
Sir David began working on natural history programs in the 1950s, and his plan, which was shot in remote parts of the world, became hugely popular. In the last four years, he has issued numerous warnings about what climate change is causing.
Sir David is especially popular among children and teenagers concerned about climate change. Greta Thunberg, a teen climate activist, said meeting the broadcaster was "indescribable" and that everyone should strive to be like him.
When asked about Sir David, children at the London Aquarium told BBC News that they enjoy watching him on TV and even have books about him.
"He does a lot of things to help our planet and animals. On his show, he warns that the natural world will be in jeopardy if we don't act, "Raya, a 10-year-old girl, explains.
She is concerned about the environment, stating that "we need to stop using plastic, start using more electric cars, and plant more trees instead of cutting them down."
