Judoka Chelsea Giles won Britain's first medal at the Tokyo Olympics with a bronze medal in the women's 52kg competition. 24-year-old Coventry beat Switzerland's Fabien Kocher with an Ippon. Scoring an early waza-ari gave Giles the lead, and he showed more composure to ensure success.
"It feels extraordinary to play in Japan. I believe I can do it, my coach has always believed, and you can see that in today's performance," he said. "I felt a perfect warm-up and lived every fight at the time. It's a fantastic arena, and the atmosphere is excellent. Playing where Japan started makes it very special.
"I don't underestimate my fight because mistakes are made. I go into the fight knowing what they are doing and what I can do. With my best performance, I know that I can beat some of the best players today."Giles lost in the quarter-finals to Utah gold medalist Abe of Japan but beat Charlene van Snick of Belgium in hopes of giving herself a medal chance.
This was followed by the bronze medals won by Sally Conway at Rio 2016 in sport and the silver and bronze medals that Gemma Gibbons and Karina Bryant won in London in 2012.
