Key Sentence:
- Tony Bennett is retiring at the age of 95, his son and manager said.
- It lifts the curtain on the singer's brilliant 70-year career, which revealed that she has Alzheimer's disease earlier this year.
However, Bennett put on two sold-out shows with Lady Gaga at New York's Radio City Music Hall last week. His son, Danny, said the "difficult decision" to cancel the remainder of the tour dates in 2021 was made "on doctor's orders." He told Variety, "Sustainable health is the most important part of it," added Bennett's wife Susan, who is helping her husband retire.
Danny, his father's manager for more than 40 years, stated that while Bennett's singing voice remained strong, the pressures of touring meant he was "getting tired." Giving concerts now is too much for him," he said.
"We're not worried about him singing. We're worried, physically ... about human nature. Tony is 95 years old." Bennett has been a lead since 1951; scoring hits with songs like I Forgot My Heart In San Francisco and The Shadow from Your Smile. It won 18 Grammys and sold over 50 million records.
Some of her biggest hits have been in the last decade, including Lady Gaga's duet album Cheek To Cheek, which won some Grammy in 2015. The pair recently picked up different Love For Sale due out in October. Last week's last live concert served to support the upcoming album.
