The Sonoma Marin Fairgrounds and Event Center has opened registrations for the 2023 World's Ugliest Dog Contest. According to the organizer's website, the competition has been running for  50 years and aims to celebrate  all dogs' "imperfections" that make them "unique and irreplaceable". Organizers believe  the contest is proof that pedigree doesn't define a pet. The event focuses on animal worship and aims to encourage animal adoption. 
 
 "The annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest isn't about making fun of 'ugly' dogs, it's about playing with cool characters and showing the world that these dogs really are beautiful," the site.Those wishing to take part in the "Battle" competition must fill out the application form, which includes a photo and a brief CV and proof of vaccinations. The main event is scheduled for June 23, 2023 at the Sonoma-Marin Show in California, USA. The day of the event begins with pre-race entertainment and  information about animal care and adoption. 
 
 Furries bask in the  red carpet glow 
 
 Furries and their owners  bask in the spotlight on the red carpet, according to the organizers' website. All attractions of the event are aimed at presenting the extraordinary beauty of dogs.A jury will judge the competition and the event will also be attended by international media, celebrities and some pet fanatics. Before the exciting competition, the organizers ensure that veterinary checks are carried out on site. There will also be animal rescue and adoption groups. "The contest isn't about making fun of 'ugly' dogs, it's about having fun with  wonderful characters and showing the world that these dogs really are beautiful!" reads the press release.
 
Winner receives $1,500 
 
Winner receives $1,500 prize and trophy. Second place receives $1,000, third place receives $500.  All canine entrants qualify for the Ghost Prize. The award honors "a dog and its owner who have overcome obstacles and/or performed community service  based on a dog's biography." Last year's winner  was "Mr.Happy Face', a 17 year old almost hairless puppy.
