Mumford's lead guitarist, The & Sons, left the band due to backlash in a tweet supporting the far-right writer. In addition, Winston Marshall took a break from the group earlier this year after calling conservative journalist Andy Ngo a "brave man" for his book claiming left-wing activists had "radical plans to destroy democracy."

Winston said he regretted the disaster his teammates caused the tweet. However, he blamed the "viral mob" for his decision to leave the group for good. "I could stay and censor myself further, but that would undermine my sense of integrity," he wrote in a blog post.

"I did not anticipate that my comments on a book criticizing the extreme left could be construed as acquiescence to the far right, which is equally disgusting." "Nothing could be further from the truth," he said, adding that 13 members of his family died in concentration camps during the Holocaust during World War II.

"Dividing and totem questions"

During the coronavirus pandemic, 33-year-old Winston used his social media accounts to comment on his reading books. Much of his response to his tweet about Andy Ngo's book went to the band's vocalist, Marcus Mumford. "Our singer's name is on sheet metal. The name dragged on through some hideous accusations because of my tweets," Winston wrote.

"The hardships [of the whole group] and their families have had this weekend, which I deeply regret. I sincerely regret it. "I accidentally involved him in the farewell totem issue." But when he decided to withdraw from the group, "another viral mob came after me, this time for the sin of apology."

He said articles calling him right-wing were "slanderous," and his political views were somewhere between "centrist" and "liberal." "The mislabeling only shows how binary political discourse emerged," he wrote. "I criticize the 'left,' so I have to be the 'right,' or at least their logic works."
